How to get a discount on your electricity bill

Last Updated on July 25, 2024

With the cost of living constantly on the rise, it is refreshing to learn that there are actually ways to reduce our bills.

The reform in the electricity market

Starting 1.1.2023, household consumers can now choose their electricity supplier. The reform is meant to increase competition and reduce prices.

As of 25.7.2024 everybody can switch to a discounted provider, regardless of whether you have a smart meter.

There are currently 8 companies that you can work with:

  1. Chevrat Hachashmal
  2. Amisragas
  3. Bezeq
  4. Electra Power
  5. Cellcom Energy
  6. Pazgas
  7. Hot Energy
  8. Partner Power

Will I have more outages or other problems with one of the new companies?

Nothing will physically change and you will still be in contact with the national Electricity Company directly if there are any outages.

The only change is that another company sends you bills. These bills will be monthly instead of every 2 months.

What deals are available?

A comparison of the available deals can be seen in our free Electricity Discount Calculator available here:

Note that we have not included deals that are only available to existing customers or that give non-cash benefits.

You can use our calculator to determine the best deal for you, based on your personal electricity usage. Keep reading!

How do I sign up?

Step 1. Do you have a smart meter?

You can check if you have a smart meter installed for your home using this chat bot.

If you have a smart meter, there is no need to guess which discount track will be best for you. Just use the Blue & White Finance Electricity Calculator in Step 2 below to do the work for you.

If you do not yet have a smart meter, you should sign up for one of the 24/7 discount offerings. Review these offerings in the table in the calculator available above and then skip forward to Step 3.

Step 2. For those with a smart meter, calculate the optimal plan for you

First download your detailed electricity usage from the Chevrat Hachashmal website. This is how you will get all the data to determine which plan will provide the best discount. First log in, then under פעולות on the left-hand side click עוד פעולות. Then under מידע אישי click נתוני הצריכה שלי, and then מצב צריכה עדכני.

Scroll down and at the bottom click למייל שלך. Within about 48 hours you will receive your electricity usage report via email.

Next, download the Blue & White Finance Electricity Calculator by entering your email below:

Follow the instructions in the calculator to paste in your usage. The calculator will tell you the best track for you and how much you personally can expect to save.

Note that the calculator does not include the fixed monthly fee, which can range from 22-30 shekels depending on the company.

Step 3. Contact the chosen company and sign up!

Visit the relevant website using one of links above.

After you leave your details, a representative will call you to walk you through the joining process. It should look roughly like this:

  1. You will sign a contract with the new provider.
  2. The new provider will process the request through an intermediary company named NOGA. NOGA will send you an SMS with a link to sign a digital form. After completing this form you should be connected by the 1st of the following month.

Step 4. Start paying less

You will receive a final bill from Chevrat Hachashmal. Going forward you will be billed monthly by the new provider at the discounted rate.

Congratulations!

Feel free to write a comment below to share with us which company you chose, the size of your expected discount, and how the process went for you!

  1. I tried filling out the form and it said my meter cannot be moved… What does that mean? I dont think I have a smart reader. What do I do next? Is it possible to speak to anyone in the electricity company about this? The Hebrew online is difficult for me.

  2. Nadav, Thank you for your important article. I am an Oleh Chadash and am renting a one-bedroom apartment in Rechavia, Jerusalem. My carrier is Chevrat Chashmal. I called them to see if I could get additional information before I start my research. They indicated that if I want a Smart Meter, it would take about four months and cost 275 NIS.
I seem to recall that you previously told me that I would not need a Smart Meter to get better rates.

Please suggest how I should proceed. Thank you.

  3. I tried using the Electric Company’s chatbot to determine whether or not I had a smart meter. However, the web page is in complex Hebrew with text that cannot be copied or automatically translated on a computer. (Yes, I could use my phone to do image processing and translation, but I really wish that Israeli websites, especially for service organizations, would have their web designers take at least a beginner’s course in internationalization.) It would be helpful if this article could walk non-Hebrew speakers through the chatbot’s prompts.

  4. I did the chat with the smart bot and it wrote I have a meter. Does that mean I have a smart meter? It wasn’t clear toe. Thanks!

  5. Is there an easy way to compare all of the companies and their different plans, without inputting data into the spreadsheet? I don’t have smart meter data, and I don’t know what use case the sample data reflects.

    • If you don’t have a smart meter then the only available plans are the 24/7 plans. You can review the list of 24/7 plans in the spreadsheet and choose the one with the highest discount %.

  6. this article was a gem and extremely easy to follow the instructions and the calculator.
I felt empowered now knowing this information and thanks for making something so complex simple to follow.

I went with the pasgas 24/7 with an expected discount of 380nis a year and waiting to hear back from them 🙂
